Once upon a time on a galaxy far far away..................

was born little Al Taylor. His parents sent him cruising the universe for a new home, not because their planet was going to blow up, but because they just didn't want him.  Al finally cruised to planet earth, a grown man, with powers and abilities far beyond those of small children..........................his only company in outer space was radio signals, so Al decided he would make his career in radio making  radio signals to hale his fellow aliens................

But Seriously,

In the 70's Al started doing small sock hop's for teens at church functions for free.  That grew to parties for friends and neighbors.  He also started having interest in radio.  He's always thought about the jocks - his favorites were Bud Buchard, Ron Chapman, Michael Seldon, Hal Jay, Harry Nelson, Jerry Thomas, Wolfman Jack, and Hubcap Carter.  In the 50's and 60's, like all the teens then, Al listened to KLIF, KBOX, WBAP, and KVIL.  All the Jocks were great, but he had his favs.

Al called one of the local stations and asked how someone gets into radio....Go to school was the reply; I was 40.  Al enrolled at Columbia School of Broadcasting and after some months, graduated.  Soon after, Chuck Brinkman called the school looking for an intern at KLUV.  All the students, except Al, were late teens or early 20's.  Because of his age, he told the school he was the only person qualified to go to the oldies giant - so he did.  Chuck had the oldest intern KLUV ever had or has had.  He was his intern midday's.  Al would leave his sales job during the day to go work for free at the station.  After a while Chuck asked Al if he wanted to produce for Hubcap Carter on Friday nights....he said yeah!  Al stayed with Hubba off and on for fifteen years.  He always kept him as his minion until his full time job got to where working the weekends wasn't possible any longer.

Al's radio history went from KLUV to KGAF 1580, Gainsville where he played current and oldie country music in the evenings.  In Al's mind, he thinks he made Billy Ray Cyrus number one in Gainesville.  Then Hubcap called and said let's go to KAAM 620 in Plano.  They did and became number one on Saturday nights in the market.  When 620 was sold, they were out of work for a while - then Jaan McCoy called Hubba and the rest is history.  He now has been doing the Saturday Night Soc Hop for two years.  It has been a wonderful success - more than he ever imagined.

Thanks to all of his teachers, friends, and Hubba, the Sock Hop is flourishing.  In the past two years, Buddy Boren, The Nightcaps, Original Casuals, Kenny and The Casuals, Gene Summers, Jimmy Valient, Bruce Channel, Maria Elena Holly, The Tokens, Johnny '56 of The Chevrons, Jesse and Trini Lopez, Tommy P and Gunny D, just to name a few, have all been guests on the show.  Now there are regulars, Buddy Boren, Tommy P, Gunny D, Lana B (Puddin), Karen From N. Dallas, and last but not least The King of Rock N' Roll (Elvis) calls every week.  Speaking of calls, most Saturdays, Al gets an average of 100 calls each show.

There are several traditions that Hubba did that Al carries on.  The name of the show is the same, the first Saturday show they did together was the Saturday Night Sock Hop.  Hubba didn't take requests, but did take suggestions - that still lives on.  Al still plays Jimmy Reed and Big Joe Turner and he doesn't play Petula Clark.  Otherwise, he does what all he's been taught and the listeners have made it a hit.
